Fuengirola trains will run every 12 minutes with new airport tunnel M. Becerra
The Government is to spend 157 million euros on a new track and underground station in the new airport terminal building
Last Friday the Cabinet of Ministers authorised an agreement between the Ministry of Development and the Spanish Airports Authority, Aena, regarding the co-financing of the new stretch of the Malaga-Fuengirola “Cercanías” railway line that will pass beneath Malaga Airport. The project, whose cost of 157 million euros will be shared by the two authorities, will be carried out parallel to the current airport expansion project known as Plan Malaga. According to Government sources the work would mean that trains could run every 12 to 15 minutes instead of the present frequency of every half hour.
Work is expected to start this year given the need for the land currently occupied by the railway line to be cleared for the new runway. The scheme will include a new double track along the entire length of the Los Prados - Airport - Campamento Benítez stretch, as well as the construction of a new underground station within the new airport terminal building, making access to the service easier for passengers.
In this way the scheme joins two major onging projects to improve the Costa del Sol’s transport infrastructure. For the last three years the Ministry of Development has been working on a project to lay a second track along some stretches of the Fuengirola line. May 2005 saw the opening of 3.7 kilometres of double line between Campamento Benítez and Benalmádena, and work is at an advanced stage on another 4.7 kilometres of double track between Benalmádena and Fuengirola.
The airport stretch will be the most ambitious of the scheme, since it involves some 11.6 kilometres and in this case the tracks will be taken underground passing beneath the River Guadalhorce and the airport's new runway. The building work, estimated to cost 156.7 million euros, will be managed by Aena, and then the Railways Authority will take over the construction of the tracks.
The airport expansion project includes the construction of a tunnel for the continuation of the AVE high speed train line (European gauge) which is necessary to take the future coastal railway line as far as Marbella.
