Flights from East Mids to Malaga and Flying with cats

Hola I am Spanish and hopefully you can help me with some questions and may be more usefull information. I want to take two cats from Málaga Airport to the U.K.There have been vaccinated against rabies about 41/2 Month ago and I am still waiting for the blood test results. The veterinary said it take 6 month until the test results come back and they can flight out to the U.K.They have their passports and microchips and will be treatet againsed flees and ticks at the appropriate timing before flying. My questions are: -Do they need special transport containers or the normal usual cat carrier boxes are o.k?-Where do I have to check in with my cats at Málaga Airport?-Do they check in before me or with me or after me.....??-Which Flight Company is the best choice? I flight to the Leiscestershire Area and usually I flight from Málaga to the East Middlands Airport.-How do I book the tickets for me and my cats and what do they cost? I know, many questions but please help me. Many thanks. Susana

Traveling with Cats to Spain

Hi Jo, I read your blog... I am leaving Costa Rica with my three fully vaccinated cats but it is a pita to get information. I cannot return to the UK as they demand that my cats have blood tests 6 months prior to travel PLUS they have to stay in quarantaine for 6 months upon arrival in the UK. I am thinking about Malta as I have a job offer there but they seem to have the same rule. I then thought Spain as I have friends and can work there too... Do you know the rules? Is it 6 months for vaccinated cats with Vet's Certificates as well? Can you advise me where to turn? Many thanks for your time Anneli

Hi Anneli

This is everything to do with animals flying here from the Main Aena Website

Pets accompanying their owners on a trip can be accepted as luggage when the corresponding tariff has been paid, regardless of the class in which the passenger is to fly.
As a general rule, these animals must be checked in and loaded into the hold of the aircraft, where they will be placed in a container which some airlines can provide.
Sometimes they are allowed to fly with their owners in the passenger cabin, provided that the pet does not cause any bother to nearby passengers. The owner must fulfil certain requirements and is responsible for the pet's care and transport during the flight. For this, the maximum measurements of the container must be respected, as well as the conditions of the maximum permitted weight of the animal with its container or cage, as applied by the airline and that should be previously consulted.
Animals must travel properly documented, through a pet passport or veterinary certificate, identified by way of a microchip or tattoo and with all required vaccinations (in some countries with an evaluation of antibodies). You can find more information at: http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/index_en.htm.
It is wise, when booking or purchasing the ticket either at the airline or the travel agency, to express your intention of taking a pet on board and to be informed of the specific conditions for transportation.
Guide dogs
Dogs trained as guides to accompany a passenger with a disability will, in general, travel in the cabin, unless prohibited by national regulations or the airlines. The dog's transport, whether in the hold or in the cabin, will not be charged. It is not necessary to carry out any special procedure, but the dog must wear a muzzle, collar and lead. If the dog is to travel in the cabin, it will be placed next to the passenger in a place indicated by the crew.

Pets to Malaga Airprot

Hi

I am possibly relocating to Spain from South Africa. I have 3 cats that I would like to bring with me as they are so much a part of me.
Could you please tell me if possible if they will have to go into quarantine when arriving in Spain?
I relocated from the USA to South Africa and they did not need quarantine here. They have been microchipped.
Please could you let me know. I would rather they not have to go through quarantine.
I look forward to hraring from you and appreciate your time.
Best Regards

Allan

Hi Allan,
Im not 100% certain, however here are 2 posts about bringing pets to Spain

Then this is the information I have from the Spanish Airport Website itself

Dogs at Malaga Airport

Hi!We will arrive at Malaga airport on the 22nd of June this summer. FromStockholm we also bring our dog and, as required from the airline, a reallybig cage for him.The problem is, since the cage is big, we would like to deposit it in theairport until we go back to Sweden, the 18th of July.Do you have any idea if this would be possible? Of course, we are preparedto pay for the service.Best regards,

My Reply...

Hi Lena

As far as I know there is no left luggage store at the airport.

However best to maybe call the airport and check with them if there is somewhere to leave the cage.

Malaga Telephone Numbers Here

Good luck

Regards

Joanne

ps: We often receive emails asking about travelling with animals - what happens etc. If you could let us know when you return, that would be great to pass on information to everyone else.

have a great holiday

Bringing Pets to Spain

Hola

I am moving to Spain in January 2007 and I want to know :-

" Where I need to go to pick up my Dog when it arrives at Malaga Airport?"
It is travelling on the same plane as myself.

I await your urgent reply

Gracias

W.

My reply...

Dear W,

A friend of mine who brought her cats over has emailed me the following.

Pet transport is a minefield! It depends on where you are flying in from. For example, if you are coming from Gatwick then only Monarch and British Airways will transport the animals and then only on certain flights (which tend to be a couple mid week) because they need to be on aircraft which have a special area between the passenger section and hold.

Also the airline will not necessarily guarantee that your pet will travel on the same flight and will probably ask you to check with the carrier. I had to do this and then they took 24 hours to get back to me. The person concerned needs to check with the airline they are using - www.ba.com is the best and this website has some pretty detailed information on transporting pets abroad like size and approved carrier type, etc.

When I brought my cats over from the UK they were checked in with me at the normal check in desk then taken away to the vet centre until they were ready to board. At Malaga they are meant to be left at cargo for you to collect, but mine were put on the luggage carousel in the arrivals hall! My friend who is taking her cats back to the UK has been told that she has to take her cat to cargo when she checks in so maybe the system has improved since I arrived.

So the short answer to your question is that it is up to the owner to make sure the airline carrier can accommodate the pet and book it on because the agents will not guarantee it. And the dog should be collected from the cargo section at Malaga but they should double check with the staff when they arrive here.
