Marbella Schools & Education in Marbella

schools in MarbellaEvery day we receive emails about people thinking of moving to Marbella. Many have kids and so their main worries are about schooling in Marbella / Spain.

Are there English Schools? How much is Private School? What about State Schools?

There are so many questions that people want answered especially on whether to go English or Spanish, Private or State. I'm not too sure that there is a correct answer except to advise you to make sure you have as much knowledge about the different systems as possible to make your own judgment - but if you are coming here with kids who have already been in English School and about to take their GCSEs, then an English / International School is best. If you are coming with a child of 3 or 4 or even 6 then they are young enough to slot into a Spanish School.

Schools in Marbella

school childrenOur aim here is to give you as much information as possible about education and schooling in Marbella and the surrounding areas.

There are some very popular International Schools in Marbella which can take kids from 3 years old to 18 years old which I find incredible when I went to a separate nursery, primary and secondary back in the UK.

There are a whole host of schools here including, English Schools, International Schools, German School, Swedish School, Spanish Private & State.

Most of these English / International Schools teach Spanish, some more than others. Some have classroom assistants all day in Spanish, some just a couple of hours a day, some just do Spanish 45 minutes a day...so if the Spanish Language is an important factor, be sure to ask how often your child will be learning / hearing Spanish.

If you do not speak any Spanish and you send your child to a Spanish School - think what's going to happen when your child has homework - are you going to be able to help them? When letters come home about activities, events, rules etc - will you be able to deal with that. Then on the other hand, once you start on a Private Education, its pretty difficult to change as the child can get used to all the facilities a Private School Offers. Can you afford it and will you be able to continue to afford it when it gets to nearly 1,200 euros per month for education?

It is a major decision and you need to know all the facts. If you plan to stay here indefinitely if your child doesn't have a good enough education in Spanish then they will have to go back to the UK to University (if they go). Whereby if your child goes to a Bilingual International School from a young age, they may have a choice of both either Spanish or English Universities.

I could go on and on talking about schools as that is all we have talked about for the past couple of years. Initially we always thought definitely a Spanish Education either private or state, but when you really get into the nitty gritty and start seeing some of the schools, you do change your mind as you may find out.
