Getting to Cordoba

We left around 2pm and arrived at Hotel Tryp Gallos, Cordoba around 4.30pm We drove the main road, from Marbella to Malaga and then followed the roads to Cordoba. They are building major roads to Cordoba so for a short while you do drive on a single lane road. You can also drive through the countryside, through Coin, Cartama etc too if you fancy.

Arrival at the Hotel Tryp Gallos Cordoba

Our hotel was cheap and basic ( around 70euros per night), but we were really happy with the location. We didn't want to be right in the center as we were going to be driving a bit to see friends. Just 2 minutes from our hotel was a beautiful park area with cafes and swings and stuff for our little girl. Then just across the road was the start of the Main City Centre. Adjoining the hotel was a cafe with WiFi and was quite busy with students as the other side of the hotel was Cordoba University.

Cordoba City & Sights

We went to the main attraction which was La Mezquita, the mosque which is now a cathedral. Tickets to go inside were 8€uros. You buy the tickets at the kiosks opposite and then just queue up to go in. It was amazing, one of the most incredible buildings I have ever been in. I now wish I went on a guide or bought the Audio to hear more about the history. There were some amazing stories.

Then we went to see one of the last 3 original Synagogues left in Spain which was also amazing to see with lots of history behind it, its very very small so you will only be in there a couple of minutes. As with most cities you have the different religious areas. There were lots of shops, including Mothercare, Zara, Mango etc with beautiful large squares to relax and take a coffee and watch the world go by.

The City is a very late city, you will see babies and children out very late playing in the streets. It also seems quite a safe city, although do watch your bags, there are a lot of beggars and people giving flowers out in exchange for money.....do not take your purse out...just continue to walk by.

Eating Out in Cordoba

The first night we were really hungry but also very very tired as we always are on Friday Nights, so we ordered a Pizza to the Hotel....it wasn't very nice and ended up going out getting a quick snack. Then the next day we went to see our friend who runs a restaurant there Pizzaiola. There are 2 Pizzaiolo Restaurants in Cordoba and they are very very busy, and now I understand why. Great food at good prices. I had the Steak Fillet and it was delicious. All the staff were lovely and friendly too and its very kid friendly with special meals for the kids.

Almodovar del Rio

We have friends that live in Almodovar del Rio, which is about 20 minutes from Cordoba City Centre. There is also a Village to Almodovar del Rio with a castle which you can see from quite a distance and looked fab, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to go and see it Next time I will definitely go. I can see why some people like living in the Campo away from the City. We sat on their terrace just looking at some of the most amazing scenery and you feel so relaxed.

Villaviciosa de Cordoba

Then we had some other friends who live close to us in Marbella who originally come from Villaviciosa de Cordoba. I was told it was 20 minutes from Cordoba City Centre......it was a proper Spanish 20 minutes that was more like 1 hour! However, it was well worth the drive. We followed the road to Villaviciosa which was around a mountain so if you don't like heights - don't do it! We then came to a typical small Spanish White Village where we called our friends to let them know we were here. We followed them to their house in the Campo.....this was another 15 minute drive....I started to get agoraphobic!!!

It was amazing, they had farm house in the middle of nowhere with animals everywhere. There were goats, lambs, chickens, dogs, cats, and all their own grown vegetables. My little girl was in her element especially when she got to hold a lamb just born the night before. Ruby ate omelette and Chips, potatoes just picked from the ground and eggs taken from the Chickens and cooked on an open fire. We ate chicken and meat along with chips, all completely organic....It was incredible. We spent the whole day with our Spanish friends and their family and we felt completely welcomed and it was great to experience a typical Spanish day in the Campo. Just one of the best days ever!

Our overall thoughts of Cordoba

I absolutely loved it. A great city with lots of stuff to do for everyone. Lots of sightseeing, walking, shopping and lots of parks and open spaces for the kids. I will definitely go back again. Next time I may even try the fast train line that they are building at this moment from Malaga.
