Castellar

In this section we are writing about places you go drive to within a few hours of Malaga Airport. There this is so much to see in Spain other than just the Costa Del Sol.

Recently we drove to Castellar which is close to Algeciras. Around 1 hour 30 mins from Marbella.

The first time we heard about Castellar was when one of our neighbours moved there. They said that they have bought a house within a Castle. Sounds amazing, so we finally took a trip there.

Castellar was a hippy place then the people of Castellar were given a new town at the bottom of the mountain, however, there were some people that just didn't want to move, so they stayed up at the castle.

We drove on the N340 towards Algeciras and took the first exit which said Castellar de Frontera. We found Castellar, but it seemed to be quite a modern town with all the infrastructure ...where was this Castle? Well, after a while we saw it......it was very very high up and looked very far away. I just couldn't believe people lived up there!

So we followed the road up and up and up....if you don't like heights, or get nervous driving on narrow cliff roads...dont do it!

Finally we get to the top, it is an old castle where a few people live and there is also a Hotel & Restaurant. Many of the houses have small shops on the ground floor for people to purchase little souvenirs or hand made objects.

It was very cold and wintry day, hence the darkness of my photos, however, it was an incredible place to see. If you go, no high heels girls....just flats. the floor is all cobbled stones.

The Hotel in Castellar is Called the Tugasa and you can find more information here at www.tugasa.com . There are small houses for 1 to 4 people that you can stay in and have all your food there too. Unless you fancy a drive down to the nearest shop every time you want something, I´d go full board.

There are numerous walks to do. If you are a bike rider there is a fantastic bike route at the bottom of Castellar de Frontera.

There is so much to explore around the Costa Del Sol other than the usual haunts.
