Malaga Airport to Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a popular place for people to visit whilst on holiday in Spain. Its a funny old place as it is English and when you go through customs, you will see English Policemen and there is a Marks & Spencers, BHS and Morrisons stores.

We get asked often about travelling to Gibraltar from Malaga Airport. Its quite a long way and there are few buses so you choices are limited if you are on a budget.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar according to Google Maps it is 129 km. Normally a 1 hour 30 minute drive.

 

Come out of Malaga Arrivals Hall and you will see the taxis outside. The Malaga AIrport Taxis will drive via the Coast Road unless you tell them to drive via the Toll and pay the extra (a few euros).

A taxi will probably charge you around €170-200. We do suggest confirming the price beforehand. Also taxis have a price book so you could check with this. Private transfers are around the same price sometimes cheaper but you get picked up in the arrivals hall and the price is already set. A private transfer works out around €168 one way. A taxi will be around the same price if not more in some cases.

Either take the Airport Bus to Marbella Bus Station. Then change for bus to La Linea. There are only 4 buses a day from Marbella to La Linea starting at 0830 till 1830 It takes 1h30mins.

Returning from La Linea to Marbella there are only 4 buses from 0715 till 1745. So if you miss the last buses you need to catch a taxi or private transfer. From La Linea you need to either catch another bus to Gibraltar or I have been told its about a 15 minute walk.

You could go from Malaga Airport to the Malaga Main Bus Station and catch the bus from there too to La Linea. It takes 3 hours. Its only 4 buses through the day first bus at 0700 last bus at 17.15. Please check all bus times to Gibraltar Here.

The Malaga Airport Train only goes as far as Fuengirola at the moment but you could take the train and then go to the bus station and catch one of the 4 buses to La Linea per day.. There are plans to extend the service at some point to Marbella but this will be a while yet. If you arrive after the last bus to La Linea, then you have to go by car.

 

To hire a car at Malaga isn't as expensive as many think. You can get a quote at the top of this page. Once you have your car the journey is about 90 minutes to Gibraltar. Here are driving directions from Malaga Airport. As you are driving, if the sea is on your left you are driving towards Marbella / Gibraltar. If the sea is on your right then you are driving towards Malaga / Nerja.

The absolute cheapest way to travel from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar would be to get the bus. This will take quite a while as its 3 hours from Malaga Bus Station to La Linea. You still need to get to the Bus Station and from La Linea to Gibraltar.

The quickest way to Gibraltar from Malaga Airport is by car either Private Transfer where driver will be waiting for you in arrivals hall so no queuing up. Often its the same price as a taxi or even if its a few euros more I personally think its worth it. The price is set and you are picked up in arrivals hall.
