With so many flights everyday (165 per week from London alone!) if you are trying to put together a cheap holiday Malaga is the ideal destination.

First of all Malaga is an area within Andalucia, Southern Spain.

Within Malaga are various other areas such as, Malaga City, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, La Cala, Riviera Del Sol, Calahonda, Marbella, Puerto Banus, San Pedro, Estepona and Sotogrande  to name a few.

Before we lived here and used to holiday here part of the fun was to try and find the best holiday we could for the least money.

Our cheap holiday in Malaga normally began with the flights, if you have kids at school then this is slightly trickier but basically there are 7 golden rules . . .

1. Check with some "discount" flight providers

2. Think about flying out with one airline, such as Easy jet  and back with another such as Monarch.

3. It could be cheaper to buy a one way ticket each way

4. Busier Airports with more flights tend to have the cheapest flights to Malaga.

5. Fly out from one airport and back to another

6. Try and fly midweek-midweek.

7. Book well in advance, the longer the better

We used to have a £150 per return ticket limit, this was the most we would pay!

Here is a fact, if you are staying in  Marbella , 50 kms from Malaga Airport , and you are there for less than 10 days, it is cheaper to hire a car for the whole visit than get a taxi or Transfers to and from the airport. The cost of taxis is roughly €1 per KM (€65 Puerto banus), that's €120 in Airport transfers alone.

If however you are staying in Benalmadena or Fuengirola then the Airport Train is the best and cheapest option. Airport taxis to Benalmadena are roughly €25 each way.  Unfortunately the train line stops at Fuengirola. Click here for Airport Trains.

An example- Some friends of ours used to stay in Riviera but went out in Puerto Banus nearly every night, although the apartment they were renting was €200 cheaper they spent €300 (€30 each way 5 times) in taxi fares plus all the travelling time.

My advice is to get a smaller, cheaper apartment in the best location you can afford, look through the newspapers, look for Holiday Magazines in large newsagents, we rented an apartment about 7 miles from Puerto Banus for £100 per week a couple of years ago when an apartment in the port was £80 per night! Ok it was not the most luxurious but it was comfortable and how much time did we actually spend in!
