Personal Car Hire Experience at Malaga Airport
Hi.Just thought I would give you a quick update on our experience with SIXT car hire after having some correspondence with you on this subject last week in October. We booked through ARGUS car hire, which linked in with Car Trawler. We usually use Holiday Autos, and have never had problems like those with ARgus/Car Trawler and Sixt. The bus turned up to take us to the Sixt office which was not far from the airport, but it was a little inconvenient having to wait, as they gathered up other passengers as well, and had a list of incoming flights with people arriving at various times within about 30 minutes of each other. Our invoice had specified how much more we had to pay to Sixt, minus deposit for the car rental that had already been taken from our card. However, THE BIG CATCH WAS that we had to pay for a whole tank of fuel IN ADVANCE. We have never experienced this before, and the receptionist insisted it was in the "small print" and we should have read it on line. I had printed out all the on-line documents that should have been necessary, which did say "take full, return empty" - but it did not say we had to pay up-front for the fuel, neither did it say which car we would get, how big the fuel tank was, and what the going rate for fuel was. Over 5 days, we were highly unlikely to use up a full tank of fuel, but despite our arguing, we had to pay up. The only alternative was to lose the deposit and go elsewhere, which was also inconvenient, and booking any car hire in an office at the airport would have been more expensive than booking on-line. We haven't yet come to a conclusion as to whose fault it was, ARGUS, CAR TRAWLER or SIXT but when we do, they will be hearing from us! Customers be aware - the cheap deal isn't what it seems!!! We returned the car with less than a quarter of a tank used up - we don't go to Spain to drive around, but to stay put, and relax!!!
Thank you for this information, it will go up on the notice board soon. Unfortunately, some car hire places do ask for this and some dont. You can either take the car empty and return it empty which can be a little nerve racking when you really dont want to put any more petrol in...but you could be cutting it fine. And also when collecting your car, have to find the petrol station straight away. Or You pay for a full tank and return it with a full tank which means you have to find a petrol station nearby once again on the way to dropping the car off. Sorry to hear your fraustration.
Regards Joanne

Be aware of Argus Car hire and their supplier National Car Hire. Despite them promising that they 'search the net for the cheapest prices so you don't have to' we had an appaling experience with them and National Car Hire at Carcassonne Airport at Christmas 06/07 and they are not recommended!
In summary they downgraded our car without notice from a c class (Focus/Astra) to a Citroen C1 - as four adults with cases and bags we couldn't fit in the car - it was Dec. 27 and we had no travel alternatives. We had to duplicate trips to get eveyone to our destination with significant inconvenience and cost. We were cautioned by the police for overloading the car on the one occasion that we squeezed everyone in. Our holiday was ruined as we couldn't really use the car and since then they have refused to refund us the cost of the car (which also had no rear wiper - when we went back to the office to point this out it was closed).
They couldn't care less, do not man their phones as stated 364 days a year (we couldn't get them in head office on Dec 27 to see what we could do) and Hertz was cheaper at their own admission. We have tried to speak to Greg Turley - Argus MD but he refuses to return our calls. In conclusion Argus and National overbook, you run the risk of a ruined holiday and neither could care less. Do not use them - they are appalling.
We have also used argus to the same effect, theyoffer a different class car to every other suplier in the world, they then offered to repay the extra money needed to upgrade, that was over a month a go and still we are arguing and they say it takes time.
Beware anyone that uses them
